The opening ceremony and plenary session of the 48th ASEAN Summit took place on 8 May in Cebu, the Philippines. On this occasion, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng joined ASEAN leaders, the ASEAN Secretary-General and representatives of international organisations.
As countries navigate deepening global crises and ongoing regional tensions, ASEAN leaders have gathered for the summit to address mounting economic pressures, rising energy costs and fragile regional security, while reaffirming the growing importance of ASEAN unity and centrality.

At the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm will pay a state visit to India and Sri Lanka from 5 to 8 of May. This will be the first visit to India and Sri Lanka by a Vietnamese leader concurrently serving as Party General Secretary and State President.
At the invitation of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Chair of ASEAN in 2026, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng will lead a high-level Vietnamese delegation to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, the Philippines, from 7 to 8 May 2026. This will be Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng’s first overseas trip in his capacity as head of government.
